Obituary for Sam "Slick" Relf
Sam “Slick” Relf, passed away on Sunday, March 18, 2018 at his home in Hurtsboro, Alabama. Funeral service will be held at 1:00 CDT, Saturday, March 24, 2018, at St. Paul A.M.E. Church, Hurtsboro, Alabama, with Pastor Brandon L. Thornton officiating. Interment will follow immediately after in the church cemetery.
Mr. Relf was born on March 5, 1936 in Gordonville, Lowndes County, Alabama to the late Jonas Relf Sr., and Tempie Coleman-Relf. He was a lifetime member St. Paul A.M.E. Church in Hurtsboro, where he served on the Steward and Trustee boards, and also as Sunday school and Bible study teacher. He attended the Russell County Training School in Hurtsboro and retired from the A.B. Carroll Lumber Company in Hurtsboro.
For more than 50 years Brother Relf was member of the Spiritualaires of Hurtsboro, Alabama, a gospel music group that performed throughout the area, on radio, and recordings. He was an avid fisherman, carpenter, and painter who performed odds and ends jobs throughout the community. He would help anyone who was in need, and he truly loved his family.
His parents, wife Mary Bates-Relf, and four sisters: Henriette Davis, Mary Jackson, Bertha Upshaw, and Annie Bell Seals; three brothers: Jonas Relf Jr, Earnest Relf and Joe Coleman, preceded him in death.
He is survived by five daughters: Debra Smith, Conley, Georgia; Jennifer Relf and Teresa (William) Mason, of Columbus, Georgia; Janice Caldwell, Charlotte, North Carolina; and Debra Jernigan, Eufaula, Alabama; four sons: Cornelius Relf, Riverdale, Georgia; Tyrone (Latonya) Relf, and Jeremiah Relf and Jabias Robinson, both of Hurtsboro; three sisters: Callie Relf, Phenix City, Alabama; Tempie Ivey and Lillie Womack, of Columbus; 30 grandchildren, and 14 great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives and friends.
