Obituary for Smith, Mary Anthony
Mrs. Mary Anthony, Miles-Smith was born March 21, 1913 to the late Griffin and Viola Banks-Anthony in Enon, Alabama. She was the oldest of ten children. She was preceded in death by her only child, Annie Mae Miles-Cook, her father; Griffin Anthony, her mother; Viola Banks-Anthony, and seven siblings; Motel Anthony, Lonnie Anthony, Nona Cobb, Elmore Anthony, Tommie Anthony, Emma Lee Owens, Willie Lee Anthony. She leaves to cherish her memories, two sisters; Katie Bell (Griffin) Jackson, Phenix Cit, Ala., Irma L. Anthony, Hurtsboro, Ala., nine Grandchildren; Abraham Cook,Jr, Evansville, IN., Alfreda McKinnis, Hammondton Township, N.J., Ava Cook, Alva Cook, Merrillville, IN., Anna (Robert) Shuford, Wetumpka, Ala., Althea McDaniel, Hammond, IN., Ave-maria (Arnold) Lewis, Wetumpka, AL., Anthony (Vanessa) James Cooks, Indianapolis, IN., Aaron Renard Cook, Merrillville, IN. She had 51-grand, great grand and great-great grandchildren. one sister-in-law, Annie Lou Anthony. A host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends and a special caregiver Miss Jennifer Golden. She confessed Christ at the age of 10 years old; she was a member of St. Mark A.M.E. Zion Church in East Chicago, IN; for over 10 years. She worked as a Housekeeper for over 60 years; and worked as needed as a Janitor for the School System in East Chicago, IN for 10 years. She was a specialist in Cake Baking, during the holidays she provided a unique service; she traveled to the individuals homes and baked in their kitchen for that extra-special personal touch. Missy, as she was affectionately known; had a deep love for children, all children. Although she only had one child, she helped to raise all of her grand, great-grand and some of her great-great grandchildren; therefore, her legacy will live in our hearts for generations to come.
